Ri-Yakitori @ The Gardens, Kuala Lumpur

It all started off with some messages exchanged over Facebook; it didn’t take long before it became a mini-gathering of sorts. It is always a pleasant experience to check-out unfamiliar food spots with a few friends; if it turns out bad, there’s always the good company to save you =)

I’ll be honest; I’m a HUGE fan of Japanese cuisine. I’ve been fortunate that my job took me to Japan on several occasions, which is also quite bad in retrospective because authentic Japanese food can be considerably different than what we get locally. Not necessarily bad, but different. One such item would be yakitori – literally grilled chicken or what I would rather call Japanese Satay! I was excited when I came across a review of Ri-Yakitori in our local Flavours magazine and somehow it became the dinner destination of choice.

Before I head off with the details, do bear in mind a few things. Google-ing will throw you a fine selection of reviews on other blogs and generally it’s all good with the grilled foie gras and the chef’s custom menu. Bad news: those items are no longer available on the menu! Nooooo~! I was rather disappointed, but do read on. Also to note is the location; it is located INSIDE Garden’s Hotel. You’ll need to head to the Hotel Lobby at the ground floor and take the hotel’s elevator to level 7. The e-kiosks are hopeless in directing you anywhere, so do take heed of this info. Happy hunting!

On a weekday, the place is relatively empty. This was surprising because I expected it to be rather full; I suppose weekends would be when the crowd comes. Location wise, it was simple and elegant and quite inviting. I can’t say if my opinion will hold if the place was jam packed like sardines. Upon being seated, we were given the menu (shown below) and I requested an introduction of their menu. The waitress was very courteous and knew the menu rather well and gave us recommendations with ease. She did, however, confirm about the removal of the items mentioned before… kind of heartbreaking but since we’re already there, the show must go on!

After flipping through the very brief menu, we settled for the set menu… all 4 of us =P Plus some ala carte sides. Oh, did I mention that the set menu below is the ONLY set they have? Sad, but true :(

Potato Salad. Nothing unique to this dish. It is served cold, mind you, so some people may not take a liking to it.

Kampung Chicken Egg with Leek. Awesome~! I totally loved this. The yolk was cooked to golden perfection and the leek and perhaps the use of kampung chicken eggs add up to a lovably unique flavour. One among us did not quite enjoy it though; I would wager that the leek may be the culprit. Leek has a very strong flavour that may turn off some people. Me? Can I have another… please! (No… we didn’t order another one… *sigh*)

Chicken meatballs. Never knew chicken meatballs could taste so good. The meat was juicy and grilled just enough to give a tender interior encased in an almost crispy shell. They’re quite huge too!

Chicken wings were delightful. The skin was crispy, the meat was tender and every one of us enjoyed it tremendously. At this point, I’d say I was willing to come back here just to order this :)

Ala carte dish number two. I honestly forgot what it was called, but its basically omelette. The chef himself served this to our table; he apparently made some alterations. He claimed it was cooked in a mixture of French and Japanese style. It was fried just enough on the outside to give a well-cooked ‘skin’ that wraps the creamier interior.

Chicken skin turned out totally different than my expectations. Under normal circumstances, anyone would expect skin to be crispy/crunchy and oh-so-flavourful. This however was chewy and not so… ‘skin’-like. Some of the pieces were remarkably juicy and melt-in-your-mouth, but overall they were a hassle. I’d dare say this gets the lowest vote of the night.

My favorite! Japanese pizza aka Okonomiyaki. It is VERY hard to get authentic tasting okonomiyaki in Malaysia, and by far this was the closest among the many places I’ve visited. The smell and the taste were so close to what I remember with the exception of one thing… volume. This here is rather thin and not brimming with vegetables and crust and noodles (depending on the type of okonomiyaki you fancy). I will give them points for doing a great job; something I’ll order again… and again.

Chicken thigh. This outranked the meatballs above. What can I say; thigh meat is among the most tender in general and it is no exception here. Everyone on the table enjoyed this. If i were to order ala carte, this would come in bulk!

Chicken breast. The one thing that no one expected to go so wrong. Dry, tasteless and tough. Definitely overcooked. It is probably deserving of a second chance, but considering all FOUR sticks tasted just as disappointing doesn’t help its case. Plus, I am not a big fan of chicken breast meat.. so that’s the end of it.

Wait.. there something missing? Yes, the stewed chicken with half-cooked egg on rice. The entree comes last and can you imagine that all the above were building up to the entree? By this point, we were all massively stuffed to the brim. I was the only one who braved the meal whilst the rest asked for takeaway. I don’t have a shot of it, but it is basically oyako-don. The chicken was tender and juicy reminiscent of the thighs. It was a simple dish and would’ve been satisfying on its own had we not been stuffed like turkeys :)

So did we enjoy ourselves? Most definitely. There were some misses in the selection, but the ones that hit were really great stuff. On a future visit (yes, it’s worth revisiting), I’ll stick to ala carte. The sticks are relatively cheap, averaging RM5. I’d say it is quite a good deal considering the servings per stick. With the added benefit of choosing only those you like, plus an added variety not available in the set, the ala carte selections are worth experimenting on. The okonomiyaki and the kampung chicken egg alone would drag me back to this place again =D Here’s to looking forward to my re-visit in the future!

Sanbanto @ SS2, Petaling Jaya

The sweet experience of pork indulgence; and no more than a few weeks from the previous indulgence in fact. Sinful? Yes. Satisfying? Hell yeah!!!

What am I ranting about? Sanbanto, of course. As can be evidenced from the previous post, I’ve had the fortunate opportunity to drop by The Pork Place, which happens to be the branch of the HQ located in the friendly food neighbourhood of SS2. I vowed to make a trip here just to experience the alternative menu that has had many visitors raving praises and satisfaction.

Of course, indulging in oh-so-sinful pork-a-licious mega-meals TWICE a month requires justification (hey… I have a conscience, OK!); reason came knocking ala the birthday of none other than my fellow makan kaki and iPhotographer! Yippee…

Anyway, back on track. Location is nothing to shout about. Both the branches seem to have a similar ambience and rather minimalistic decor. It works well enough; we’re here for the food and the place just makes it feel comfortable and simple to enjoy a meal. First thing greeting us was the good fortune of confirming that the menu online *is* the menu for this place. Add the fact that it was also a weekend… *grin*… weekend specials are ON!

The Sanbanto-recommended Pork Belly Salad kick-started our meal. We didn’t call out for a specific dressing, but the menu implied Honey Mustard was the default. Judging by the tangy, albeit mild, kick… it might’ve been something else. Regardless, it went very well with the dish and the slices of pork had the trademark flavour unique to Sanbanto. Read: delicious!

We’re a cheesy bunch (hehe… yea, I know… lame =P) and that means something called Cheese Baked Meat Balls would definitely not go unnoticed. The meat, something of a trend here, is flavourful and the dish was quite enjoyable. My personal opinion, however, is that the cheese was rather mild both in flavour and texture. It does compliment the dish by not overpowering the meat… but I suppose everyone has their own expectations. It is by no means bad, though.

Yummy~! *This* was the whole reason for our visit; the English Roast Pork. It’s only available over the weekends and only at the SS2 branch. Tender, juicy, perfectly roasted slices of pork served with wine sauce, egg yolk and an assortment of vegetables. I’d wager that the slices were specially picked from premium cuts; mouth-wateringly satisfying and every bite from meat to the skin was enjoyable. I wouldn’t say the portion was substantial, but eating this solo with appetizers on the side might be overkill for most . All the above dishes were shared by two and it all turned out just nice. In fact, we had space to spare enough for dessert, too!

I have to point out that the dessert menu is a bit limited here, but fret not. KTZ is just down the street from Sanbanto if you’re up for a light closure to the oh-so-satisfying dinner. Would I come here again? You bet!

…just not anytime soon. Way too much pork for one month! =Þ

The Pork Place @ IOI Boulevard, Puchong

I’ve heard quite a bit of a new specialty pork restaurant, Sanbanto. Located in SS2, I’ve yet to have the good fortune of visiting the eatery. Good news comes in a variety of forms, indeed. Apparently Sanbanto has started expanding and one of their newest branches is located not far from where I work.

IOI Boulevard is a relatively new commercial development smack in the middle of an already busy and bustling (not to mention, competitive) business area. It’s just opposite IOI Mall and just walking distance from Neway. I myself have not been there before and visiting a branch of Sanbanto was reason enough to change that. Surprisingly, the IOI branch does not inherit the ‘Sanbanto’ name. Instead, it goes by the (appropriate) name of The Pork Place. Straight to the point!

The shop is small and cosy. I expect the weekend visits will require reservations as the number of tables are somewhat limited. This is partly due to half the shop space allocated to sell fresh pork meat in all cuts and sizes. I can’t gauge where the prices stand in the market, but judging from the restaurant’s servings, the meat here is to die for!

As my friend and I got ready to order, we were disappointed with one thing. The online website for the chain provides the menu of the main branch only! Apparently, the menu here seriously lacks variety in almost every way. Even their signature weekend-only items are different! Tip from the wise: check this place out on a weekend. I might plan a future re-visit to check out their weekend specials.

Sliced Belly Salad

For starters, we ordered the only salad that sounded interesting: Sliced Belly Salad. This here are juicy and tender slices of pork belly, served on a bed of salad leaves with generous toppings of salmon roe. The dressing’s flavour is mild and helps the pork belly taste to stand out. Had I known the size of the servings, I might’ve taken this as an entree. Highly recommended!

Breaded Pork

Their largest selections are in the form of pasta dishes and sandwiches/burgers. My friend ordered the Breaded Pork pasta. It comes served in Japanese curry sauce. I have to admit that at first glance, I thought it was katsu-don served with pasta which is not far from the truth. The meat, to our surprise, was still juicy and has a unique flavour special to this chain I suppose. The curry does well to complement the dish without masking the delicious texture and taste of the meat.

Shoulder Loin Steak in Cream Sauce

My main course has an aptly named Special Cut Shoulder Loin Steak and comes in a choice of black pepper or cream sauce. I opted for the cream sauce (yum!). Be prepared to be served a LARGE steak. This is the closest to beef steak I can get; the right thickness and cooked to a perfect medium-rare for my liking (though such a request was never made). This is an excellent dish to appreciate how special the pork at Sanbanto really is. Specially bred pork and an ISO-certified business may sound like bragging details, but not when the results reflect their labour and love to deliver! The sauce was nice too, but it leans to the saltier side which I only noticed as the dish was getting colder. Yes… I admit it took me a while to finish this dish.

Only 3 dishes? Yes. There were only two of us, and we were already having trouble finishing the stuff we ordered. Regardless, the experience was more than enjoyable and I’d warrant a second visit on the weekends just to check out their specials. To those who have never been there, this is my advise: this is a great place to check out for a group of 4 on the weekends. The variety on the menu would be just nice then, and enough people to share and enjoy it all.

What about price? Most dishes range from RM15-30, which is reasonable and average in comparison to other similar restaurants. Their specials can hit above RM40, but the experience alone warrants forgiving the price. I’m not complaining, that’s for sure.

Be on the lookout for a future update on their other selections, and perhaps even a visit to their main branch!
